Questions 1-7
Choose the correct letter, A, B, C or D.

Write your answers in boxes 1-7 on your answer sheet.

1. Which of the following are true in regards to the scheduling?

2. How can reservations be made?

3. Which of the following is a perk of Southwest Guests Club members?

4. Which of the following is not true regarding the speech given by Dr. Brandart?

5. In addition to apparel suggestions, what else are guests advised to do?

6. How will guests receive confirmation of their order?

7. How can guests present their tickets?

The answer is B. The passage states, “Guests must stay for both days in order to experience the full effects of the solar energy weekend” (from the 'Date and Time' section), which shows that all guests are required to attend both Saturday and Sunday, making (B) correct. Options (A), (C), and (D) are contradicted by the same sentence or not supported by the text.

Associated Text:
Guests must stay for both days in order to experience the full effects of the solar energy weekend.

The answer is C. The passage says, “Reservations can be made by calling our headquarters at 1-800-2849” (from the introduction at the top), which matches option (C). There is no mention of making reservations by writing, attending, or emailing the company in the passage, so (A), (B), and (D) are incorrect.

Associated Text:
Reservations can be made by calling our headquarters at 1-800-2849.

The answer is A. The passage explains, “For those of you who are part of the Southwest Guests Club, you will receive 15% off of your ticket price and are free to bring one guest at no extra charge” (in the 'Special Guests and Features' section). This shows that a discounted ticket price is a perk for club members, which corresponds to (A). Options (B), (C), and (D) are not perks specifically mentioned for club members.

Associated Text:
For those of you who are part of the Southwest Guests Club, you will receive 15% off of your ticket price and are free to bring one guest at no extra charge.

The answer is D. In the 'Special Guests and Features' section, the passage states, “Dr. Brandart from the University of Wisconsin will be in attendance and will be speaking on behalf of the Solar Energy Council on Saturday evening. Participating during this talk is free, and will be followed by a group discussion and interactive Question and Answer session with Dr. Brandart himself!” Nowhere does it mention that Dr. Brandart will update guests on recent changes in the leadership of the Solar Energy Council, so (D) is not true, making it the correct answer for 'not true'.

Associated Text:
Dr. Brandart from the University of Wisconsin will be in attendance and will be speaking on behalf of the Solar Energy Council on Saturday evening. Participating during this talk is free, and will be followed by a group discussion and interactive Question and Answer session with Dr. Brandart himself!

The answer is B. The passage states, “Guests should also plan on bringing any questions or ideas with them to the event, as there will be a plethora of workshops and opportunities for discussion” (in the 'What To Expect' section). This indicates that in addition to clothing/apparel suggestions, guests should bring questions for discussion. While options (A) and (C) relate to dressing warmly, and (D) is about ticketing, only (B) is directly mentioned beyond apparel suggestions.

Associated Text:
Guests should also plan on bringing any questions or ideas with them to the event, as there will be a plethora of workshops and opportunities for discussion.

The answer is C. The passage under 'Costs and Tickets' mentions, “Tickets will be e-mailed after receipt of payment,” clearly indicating that guests will receive confirmation via email. Options (A), (B), and (D) are not directly supported by the text.

Associated Text:
Tickets will be e-mailed after receipt of payment.

The answer is A. The passage states, “Guests are advised to bring their tickets with them (either printed or electronically) in order to be allowed entrance into the Peterson Pavillion” (from the 'Costs and Tickets' section). Therefore, guests can present their tickets either printed or electronically.

Associated Text:
Guests are advised to bring their tickets with them (either printed or electronically) in order to be allowed entrance into the Peterson Pavillion.

Questions 8-14
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the reading passage? In boxes 8-14 on your answer sheet, write

TRUE   if the statement agrees with the information
FALSE   if the statement contradicts the information
NOT GIVEN   if there is no information on this.

8. The MaxiLife Television is the most popular item sold at Homeland Automation Services.

9. Customers can read the information on the flyer via email and hard copy, when they purchase the 37” MaxiLife Television.

10. Televisions smaller than 37” are not eligible for delivery.

11. The company warehouse will have further information regarding purchases made at franchise stores.

12. Customers who order online must pick up their products, as delivery is not an option.

13. The Customer Service Team is primarily available online.

14. Homeland Automation Services would prefer the home theatre set-up to take place on the same day of delivery.

The answer is NOT GIVEN. The only mention about the MaxiLife Television is, “We are delighted that you have purchased one of our many best-selling items, the 37” MaxiLife Television with surround sound and High-Definition quality!” (from the introduction of the delivery passage). While this confirms the item is among the best sellers, it does not state that it is the most popular item, so the information is not given.

Associated Text:
We are delighted that you have purchased one of our many best-selling items, the 37” MaxiLife Television with surround sound and High-Definition quality!

The answer is TRUE. The passage says, “We are sending you this email with more information on your recent purchase. However, please be aware that you can find the exact information from this email included in your package, once it arrives.” (from the introduction of the delivery passage). This confirms that information is available both by email and in the package (hard copy).

Associated Text:
We are sending you this email with more information on your recent purchase. However, please be aware that you can find the exact information from this email included in your package, once it arrives.

The answer is NOT GIVEN. The relevant passage says, “Delivery by September 10, 2019 is guaranteed for televisions that are equal to or greater than 37” and have been purchased at our headquarters in Tacoma, Washington.” There is no explicit statement in the passage about televisions smaller than 37” and their eligibility for delivery, so the information is not given.

Associated Text:
Delivery by September 10, 2019 is guaranteed for televisions that are equal to or greater than 37” and have been purchased at our headquarters in Tacoma, Washington.

The answer is TRUE. The passage specifies, “If a similarly sized television has been purchased at one of our franchise locations, we cannot guarantee the same delivery date. Please contact our warehouse for more details at 393-229-4928.” (from the 'Delivery' section). This proves the warehouse can provide more information regarding franchise purchases.

Associated Text:
If a similarly sized television has been purchased at one of our franchise locations, we cannot guarantee the same delivery date. Please contact our warehouse for more details at 393-229-4928.

The answer is FALSE. The passage says, “Delivery is not included in the cost of online and open-box purchases. If you are interested in adding on this service for $50.00, please contact our Customer Specialist Team” (from the Delivery section). This shows that delivery is available for a fee, so it is not true that customers must pick up their products if they order online.

Associated Text:
Delivery is not included in the cost of online and open-box purchases. If you are interested in adding on this service for $50.00, please contact our Customer Specialist Team

The answer is FALSE. The passage states, “please contact our Customer Specialist Team, available 24/7 via online chat. Otherwise, you can call our headquarters at 393-229-4928 at any time.” (from the Delivery section). This demonstrates that customer service is available both online and by phone equally, not primarily online as stated in the question.

Associated Text:
please contact our Customer Specialist Team, available 24/7 via online chat. Otherwise, you can call our headquarters at 393-229-4928 at any time.

The answer is NOT GIVEN. Although the passage states, “It is not imperative that the home theatre setup is done during the same day of delivery, but it must be completed within a week of delivery,” it does not specify a preference for the same day, only a requirement that it is done within a week. Thus, the preference is not stated.

Associated Text:

Tips to improve your reading speed
To get a high score on the IELTS reading section, you need to have a fast reading speed. To have a fast reading speed, you need to improve your vocabulary and practice dissecting sentences. One strategy to dissect a sentence is to look for the subject and verb of the sentence. Finding the subject and verb will help you better understand the main idea of said sentence. Keep in mind, a common feature of a IELTS reading passage is to join strings of ideas to form long compound sentences. This produces large chunks that students have a hard time absorbing. Do not get overwhelmed by its length, just look for the subject and verb, the rest of the ideas will flow.

Keep in mind, having a slow reading speed makes skimming or scanning a reading passage more difficult. The process of quickly skimming through a reading passage for specific keywords or main ideas is a requirement for you to employ successful reading strategies to improve your IELTS reading score. In other words, skimming and scanning are critical skills to ensure you complete all questions in the allotted time frame.
IELTS Reading Strategies
Once you can read and comprehend a passage with a rate of, at least, 220 words per minute, you'll be ready to start implementing our strategies. All too often, students spend too much time reading the passages and not enough time answering the questions. Here is a step by step guide for tackling the reading section.

  1. Step 1: Read questions first

One of the most common mistakes that candidates make when approaching the reading exam is reading every single word of the passages. Although you can practice for the exam by reading for pleasure, "reading blindly" (reading without any sense of what the questions will ask) will not do you any favors in the exam. Instead, it will hurt your chances for effectively managing your time and getting the best score.

The main reason to read the questions first is because the type of question may determine what you read in the passage or how you read it. For example, some question types will call for the "skimming" technique, while others may call for the "scanning" technique.

It is important to answer a set of questions that are of the same question type. You'll need to determine which question type you want to tackle first. A good strategy would be to start with the easier question type and move on to more difficult question types later. The Easiest question types are the ones where you spend less time reading. For example, the Matching Heading question type is an easier one because you only need to find the heading that best describes the main idea of a paragraph. An example of a difficult question type would be Identifying Information. For this question type, you'll need to read each paragraph to find out if each statement is TRUE, FALSE, or NOT GIVEN according to the passage.

Here is a table that lists the difficulty levels for each question type. Use this table as a reference when choosing which question type you want to tackle first.

    Difficulty level Question Type
    Easy Sentence Completion
    Short answer
    Medium Matching Features
    Multiple choice
    Matching Headings
    Summary, Table, Flow-Chart Completion
    Difficult Matching Sentence Endings
    Matching Information
    Identifying Information (TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN)
    Identifying Viewer's claims (YES/NO/NOT GIVEN)

  2. Step 2: Read for an objective

After you've read the questions for the passage, you will be able to read for an objective. What does this mean? For example, if you come across a question that includes the year "1896", you can make a note of when this year comes up in the text, using it to answer the question later on. There are two reading techniques that will help you stay on track with reading for an objective. The first one, skimming, is best defined as reading fast in order to get the "gist", or general idea, or a passage. With this technique, you are not stopping for any unfamiliar words or looking for specific details. The second technique, scanning, is best defined as reading for specific information. With this technique, you are not reading for the overall gist, but rather, specific information. Notice how each of these techniques has a specific objective in mind. This will help you find information more quickly.

  3. Step 3: Take notes

As you're reading for an objective, you should also be making notes on the margins of the passage, placing stars next to key information, or underlining things that you believe will help you answer the various questions. This will make it easier for you to check back when you are asked certain things in the questions. Choose whichever note-taking system is right for you - just make sure you do it!

  4. Step 4: Answer wisely

After you've read the questions, read the passage, and have taken any appropriate notes, you you should have located the part of the text where you where you need to read carefully. Then just read carefully and think critically to determine the correct answer.
