15. Section A

16. Section B

17. Section C

18. Section D

19. Section E

20. Section F

21. Section G

The answer is v. Section A is best matched with the heading "What is a Scammer?" because, in the first paragraph, the text says, “What are they? Well, scammers are con artists who know that finding a job can be a difficult and somewhat unpleasant task.” This introduces and defines what scammers are, aligning perfectly with heading (v).

Associated Text:
“What are they? Well, scammers are con artists who know that finding a job can be a difficult and somewhat unpleasant task.”

The answer is x. Section B discusses the signs that indicate a job scam, as it states, “The clearest sign is that once you pay, the job never materializes! Additionally, scammers may ask you for your credit card or bank information in order to pay a fee for a certification, training materials, or the like.” This clearly identifies the characteristics of job scams, making (x) the most appropriate heading.

Associated Text:
“The clearest sign is that once you pay, the job never materializes! Additionally, scammers may ask you for your credit card or bank information in order to pay a fee for a certification, training materials, or the like.”

The answer is i. Section C is concerned with real, legitimate job placement services. The section states: “It is best not to get confused with real, legitimate services that will place you with a great employer. These services will never ask you for money in advance and will deliver on their promises.” Therefore, heading (i) correctly summarizes the content of Section C.

Associated Text:
“It is best not to get confused with real, legitimate services that will place you with a great employer. These services will never ask you for money in advance and will deliver on their promises.”

The answer is viii. Section D asks readers to distinguish between placement and counseling services: “Make sure that you understand whether or not you are working with a placement service or a counseling service. What are the differences?” The following sentences explain each, so heading (viii) fits perfectly.

Associated Text:
“Make sure that you understand whether or not you are working with a placement service or a counseling service. What are the differences? Well, counseling services will help people with career directions and decisions. Placement services, on the other hand, usually require a hefty fee for directly placing you with a company for a fixed amount of time.”

The answer is vii. Section E guides readers on where to look for attractive job offers: “However, do you know where you can find attractive job offers? In addition to scouring online job boards and newspaper classifieds, check out various websites and LinkedIn networks.” Therefore, the main theme is about places to search for jobs, making (vii) the correct heading.

Associated Text:
“However, do you know where you can find attractive job offers? In addition to scouring online job boards and newspaper classifieds, check out various websites and LinkedIn networks.”

The answer is iii. Section F focuses on what to do if you become a victim of a scam, stating, “If that is the case, be aware of your rights. You should always file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and provide as much detail as possible.” This is clearly about reporting scams, so (iii) is the best heading.

Associated Text:
“If that is the case, be aware of your rights. You should always file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and provide as much detail as possible.”

The answer is iv. Section G encourages readers to make sure they know how to avoid scams: “Make sure you are well aware of everything you can do to avoid these circumstances.” The focus is on protecting oneself, which matches heading (iv).

Associated Text:
“Make sure you are well aware of everything you can do to avoid these circumstances.”

A list of countries
  1. Europe
  2. China
  3. North America
  4. South America

In which area should a candidate apply if he/she is interested in

22. escaping the routine of typical office life

23. analysing potential instabilities and proposed actions

24. speculating necessary company expenditures

25. showcasing the company to non-employees

26. figuring out quandaries for both employees and non-employees

27. working closely with seasoned resources

The answer is B. The statement about escaping the routine of typical office life refers to China, as the passage states, “Since working directly with customers is a large part of this role, we hope that our candidates will enjoy working outside of the office with people, including newscasters, public relations officials, and non-profit community organizers.” This describes an active, people-oriented role outside the office.

Associated Text:
“Since working directly with customers is a large part of this role, we hope that our candidates will enjoy working outside of the office with people, including newscasters, public relations officials, and non-profit community organizers.”

The answer is A. Analysing potential instabilities and proposed actions matches Europe, as the passage says, “Our strongest areas in Europe continue to be, however, effective risk management. In this area, we help companies unlock their true potential by understanding the various 'pros and cons' of decision-making. Our clients rely on our strategies in order to understand their industry experience and advance in their various sectors.” This involves analysing risks (instabilities) and courses of action.

Associated Text:
“Our strongest areas in Europe continue to be, however, effective risk management. In this area, we help companies unlock their true potential by understanding the various 'pros and cons' of decision-making. Our clients rely on our strategies in order to understand their industry experience and advance in their various sectors.”

The answer is D. Speculating necessary company expenditures is related to South America. The relevant passage states: “Our clients in this area are expecting us to look at numbers, forecast budgets, and use our analytical skills to lead them in the right direction when it comes to money.” This involves forecasting budgets, which is speculating about company expenditures.

Associated Text:
“Our clients in this area are expecting us to look at numbers, forecast budgets, and use our analytical skills to lead them in the right direction when it comes to money.”

The answer is B. Showcasing the company to non-employees is best matched with China. In the passage, it says, “These employees will work closely with unleashing various campaigns throughout the year, both on the local and global scales. Here, you will gain deep insight into our work with the public, while developing strong leadership qualities and customer service skills.” This is about communicating and promoting the company (the brand) externally, which is showcasing it to non-employees.

Associated Text:
“These employees will work closely with unleashing various campaigns throughout the year, both on the local and global scales. Here, you will gain deep insight into our work with the public, while developing the strong leadership qualities and customer service skills.”

The answer is C. Figuring out quandaries for both employees and non-employees happens in North America. The passage says, “Therefore, we are truly calling all problem-solvers who are ready to 'save the day' for employees with some of the most difficult problems.” It also discusses helping recently unemployed members (non-employees), hence North America is correct.

Associated Text:
“Therefore, we are truly calling all problem-solvers who are ready to 'save the day' for employees with some of the most difficult problems.”

The answer is A. Working closely with seasoned resources is a feature of the Europe programme. The passage states, “For the first 12 months of employment, the selected candidates will have a designated senior manager assigned to them, so that ongoing support and coaching can be delivered.” The designated senior manager functions as a seasoned (experienced) resource.

Associated Text:
“For the first 12 months of employment, the selected candidates will have a designated senior manager assigned to them, so that ongoing support and coaching can be delivered.”

Tips to improve your reading speed
To get a high score on the IELTS reading section, you need to have a fast reading speed. To have a fast reading speed, you need to improve your vocabulary and practice dissecting sentences. One strategy to dissect a sentence is to look for the subject and verb of the sentence. Finding the subject and verb will help you better understand the main idea of said sentence. Keep in mind, a common feature of a IELTS reading passage is to join strings of ideas to form long compound sentences. This produces large chunks that students have a hard time absorbing. Do not get overwhelmed by its length, just look for the subject and verb, the rest of the ideas will flow.

Keep in mind, having a slow reading speed makes skimming or scanning a reading passage more difficult. The process of quickly skimming through a reading passage for specific keywords or main ideas is a requirement for you to employ successful reading strategies to improve your IELTS reading score. In other words, skimming and scanning are critical skills to ensure you complete all questions in the allotted time frame.
IELTS Reading Strategies
Once you can read and comprehend a passage with a rate of, at least, 220 words per minute, you'll be ready to start implementing our strategies. All too often, students spend too much time reading the passages and not enough time answering the questions. Here is a step by step guide for tackling the reading section.

  1. Step 1: Read questions first

One of the most common mistakes that candidates make when approaching the reading exam is reading every single word of the passages. Although you can practice for the exam by reading for pleasure, "reading blindly" (reading without any sense of what the questions will ask) will not do you any favors in the exam. Instead, it will hurt your chances for effectively managing your time and getting the best score.

The main reason to read the questions first is because the type of question may determine what you read in the passage or how you read it. For example, some question types will call for the "skimming" technique, while others may call for the "scanning" technique.

It is important to answer a set of questions that are of the same question type. You'll need to determine which question type you want to tackle first. A good strategy would be to start with the easier question type and move on to more difficult question types later. The Easiest question types are the ones where you spend less time reading. For example, the Matching Heading question type is an easier one because you only need to find the heading that best describes the main idea of a paragraph. An example of a difficult question type would be Identifying Information. For this question type, you'll need to read each paragraph to find out if each statement is TRUE, FALSE, or NOT GIVEN according to the passage.

Here is a table that lists the difficulty levels for each question type. Use this table as a reference when choosing which question type you want to tackle first.

    Difficulty level Question Type
    Easy Sentence Completion
    Short answer
    Medium Matching Features
    Multiple choice
    Matching Headings
    Summary, Table, Flow-Chart Completion
    Difficult Matching Sentence Endings
    Matching Information
    Identifying Information (TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN)
    Identifying Viewer's claims (YES/NO/NOT GIVEN)

  2. Step 2: Read for an objective

After you've read the questions for the passage, you will be able to read for an objective. What does this mean? For example, if you come across a question that includes the year "1896", you can make a note of when this year comes up in the text, using it to answer the question later on. There are two reading techniques that will help you stay on track with reading for an objective. The first one, skimming, is best defined as reading fast in order to get the "gist", or general idea, or a passage. With this technique, you are not stopping for any unfamiliar words or looking for specific details. The second technique, scanning, is best defined as reading for specific information. With this technique, you are not reading for the overall gist, but rather, specific information. Notice how each of these techniques has a specific objective in mind. This will help you find information more quickly.

  3. Step 3: Take notes

As you're reading for an objective, you should also be making notes on the margins of the passage, placing stars next to key information, or underlining things that you believe will help you answer the various questions. This will make it easier for you to check back when you are asked certain things in the questions. Choose whichever note-taking system is right for you - just make sure you do it!

  4. Step 4: Answer wisely

After you've read the questions, read the passage, and have taken any appropriate notes, you you should have located the part of the text where you where you need to read carefully. Then just read carefully and think critically to determine the correct answer.
