29. Dieticians would state that

30. Injuries can be avoided by

31. If the body does not have enough carbohydrates

32. People who exercise in the morning

33. People who exercise in the afternoon

34. People who exercise in the evening

The answer is B. The passage states, "Fitness experts believe that no matter what type of workout routine you end up doing, you need to breathe fully and more importantly, you should not be digesting in an intense way while you work out." (Paragraph 1). Among choices (A)(B)(C)(D), only (B) – "you should avoid overeating beforehand" – is directly supported, as the passage cautions against intense digestion while exercising, which would result from overeating.

Associated Text:
Fitness experts believe that no matter what type of workout routine you end up doing, you need to breathe fully and more importantly, you should not be digesting in an intense way while you work out.

The answer is A. The passage clearly states, "Most dieticians agree that the best approach is to eat small portions rather often. In other words: give yourself permission to snack throughout the day!" (Paragraph 2). Option (A) directly reflects this dietary recommendation, whereas the other choices are contradicted or not supported in the text.

Associated Text:
Most dieticians agree that the best approach is to eat small portions rather often. In other words: give yourself permission to snack throughout the day!

The answer is D. Paragraph 3 states, "Additionally, there is new evidence that eating the right balance of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats before exercising can even promote the avoidance of common injuries and pitfalls while exercising." Only (D) "eating a proper balance of foods before exercising" matches this cause and effect.

Associated Text:
Additionally, there is new evidence that eating the right balance of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats before exercising can even promote the avoidance of common injuries and pitfalls while exercising.

The answer is C. In paragraph 3, the passage says, "if your body does not contain any carbohydrates, the body will use up nutrients and fibers in your muscles. The result is a likely muscle tear or a strain that is difficult to get rid of." This supports (C) – it pulls nutrients from muscles if carbohydrates are lacking.

Associated Text:
if your body does not contain any carbohydrates, the body will use up nutrients and fibers in your muscles. The result is a likely muscle tear or a strain that is difficult to get rid of.

The answer is D. In paragraph 4, the passage states: "If you practice in the morning, for instance, it is of utmost importance that you consume calories beforehand. If not, you run the risk of fainting or getting too close to exhaustion." Therefore, those who don't eat beforehand may become exhausted.

Associated Text:
If you practice in the morning, for instance, it is of utmost importance that you consume calories beforehand. If not, you run the risk of fainting or getting too close to exhaustion.

The answer is A. In paragraph 5, regarding afternoon exercise, it mentions: "snacks should be consumed about an hour or two beforehand. A great option could include sliced apples, walnuts, or a light lunch that could be easily digested by the body." This shows you should eat foods that are easily digested.

Associated Text:
snacks should be consumed about an hour or two beforehand. A great option could include sliced apples, walnuts, or a light lunch that could be easily digested by the body.

The answer is B. In paragraph 6, it says: "Dieticians warn, however, that you should eat a light dinner if you feel faint after your evening workout." (B) matches this information, showing eating is recommended if you feel faint.

Associated Text:
Dieticians warn, however, that you should eat a light dinner if you feel faint after your evening workout.

Questions 35-40
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the reading passage? In boxes 35-40 on your answer sheet, write

YES   if the statement reflects the claims of the writer
NO   if the statement contradicts the claims of the writer
NOT GIVEN   if it is impossible to say what the writer thinks about this

35. Most people are not properly informed of how important proper eating can be.

36. Sweets are never helpful when it comes to intermittent snacking.

37. In this day and age, it is difficult to avoid common injuries.

38. Habits before and after exercising are equally important.

39. Leading professionals only ever publish tips for those in proper health.

40. Energy and passion are enough to help someone immediately change their eating and exercise plans.

The answer is YES. The passage states, "If you are like most people, you might think that practicing yoga or any fitness routine in lieu of lunch seems like a great idea", and further implies that people often do not realize "just how important a proper balance in nutrients and fibers can be when you exercise." This highlights that most are not properly informed about proper eating's importance (Paragraph 1).

Associated Text:
If you are like most people, you might think that practicing yoga or any fitness routine in lieu of lunch seems like a great idea. ... you might not realize just how important a proper balance in nutrients and fibers can be when you exercise.

The answer is NO. The relevant passage in paragraph 2 says, "However, if you want to fuel your body in a way that gives off sustained energy, go directly for nutritious foods rather than sweets." While sweets are discouraged for sustained energy, the passage does not state they are never helpful. Thus, an absolute statement like 'never helpful' contradicts the writer's claims.

Associated Text:
However, if you want to fuel your body in a way that gives off sustained energy, go directly for nutritious foods rather than sweets.

The answer is NOT GIVEN. While the passage discusses avoiding injuries and mentions diet, it does not make any statements about the general difficulty of avoiding injuries in the present day. There is no information to support or refute this statement.

Associated Text:

The answer is YES. In paragraph 4, the writer says, "it is important to keep in mind that what you do after your practice can be just as important as what you do beforehand." This makes it clear that both pre- and post-exercise habits are equally important.

Associated Text:
it is important to keep in mind that what you do after your practice can be just as important as what you do beforehand.

The answer is NOT GIVEN. The passage tells us that the advice is meant for people in "tip-top medical condition" and not for those with serious illnesses, but it does not state that leading professionals "only ever" publish tips for those in proper health. There is no direct comment on publication practices.

Associated Text:
Although the information provided is quite general, it is important to keep in mind that this advice from leading professionals is meant for people who are in tip-top medical condition.

The answer is NO. The last sentence of the passage makes it clear: "experts urge all athletes, both new and experienced, to try out various routines and programs before committing strenuously to a given practice in haste." This contradicts the idea that energy and passion are enough for abrupt change.

Associated Text:
experts urge all athletes, both new and experienced, to try out various routines and programs before committing strenuously to a given practice in haste.

Tips to improve your reading speed
To get a high score on the IELTS reading section, you need to have a fast reading speed. To have a fast reading speed, you need to improve your vocabulary and practice dissecting sentences. One strategy to dissect a sentence is to look for the subject and verb of the sentence. Finding the subject and verb will help you better understand the main idea of said sentence. Keep in mind, a common feature of a IELTS reading passage is to join strings of ideas to form long compound sentences. This produces large chunks that students have a hard time absorbing. Do not get overwhelmed by its length, just look for the subject and verb, the rest of the ideas will flow.

Keep in mind, having a slow reading speed makes skimming or scanning a reading passage more difficult. The process of quickly skimming through a reading passage for specific keywords or main ideas is a requirement for you to employ successful reading strategies to improve your IELTS reading score. In other words, skimming and scanning are critical skills to ensure you complete all questions in the allotted time frame.
IELTS Reading Strategies
Once you can read and comprehend a passage with a rate of, at least, 220 words per minute, you'll be ready to start implementing our strategies. All too often, students spend too much time reading the passages and not enough time answering the questions. Here is a step by step guide for tackling the reading section.

  1. Step 1: Read questions first

One of the most common mistakes that candidates make when approaching the reading exam is reading every single word of the passages. Although you can practice for the exam by reading for pleasure, "reading blindly" (reading without any sense of what the questions will ask) will not do you any favors in the exam. Instead, it will hurt your chances for effectively managing your time and getting the best score.

The main reason to read the questions first is because the type of question may determine what you read in the passage or how you read it. For example, some question types will call for the "skimming" technique, while others may call for the "scanning" technique.

It is important to answer a set of questions that are of the same question type. You'll need to determine which question type you want to tackle first. A good strategy would be to start with the easier question type and move on to more difficult question types later. The Easiest question types are the ones where you spend less time reading. For example, the Matching Heading question type is an easier one because you only need to find the heading that best describes the main idea of a paragraph. An example of a difficult question type would be Identifying Information. For this question type, you'll need to read each paragraph to find out if each statement is TRUE, FALSE, or NOT GIVEN according to the passage.

Here is a table that lists the difficulty levels for each question type. Use this table as a reference when choosing which question type you want to tackle first.

    Difficulty level Question Type
    Easy Sentence Completion
    Short answer
    Medium Matching Features
    Multiple choice
    Matching Headings
    Summary, Table, Flow-Chart Completion
    Difficult Matching Sentence Endings
    Matching Information
    Identifying Information (TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN)
    Identifying Viewer's claims (YES/NO/NOT GIVEN)

  2. Step 2: Read for an objective

After you've read the questions for the passage, you will be able to read for an objective. What does this mean? For example, if you come across a question that includes the year "1896", you can make a note of when this year comes up in the text, using it to answer the question later on. There are two reading techniques that will help you stay on track with reading for an objective. The first one, skimming, is best defined as reading fast in order to get the "gist", or general idea, or a passage. With this technique, you are not stopping for any unfamiliar words or looking for specific details. The second technique, scanning, is best defined as reading for specific information. With this technique, you are not reading for the overall gist, but rather, specific information. Notice how each of these techniques has a specific objective in mind. This will help you find information more quickly.

  3. Step 3: Take notes

As you're reading for an objective, you should also be making notes on the margins of the passage, placing stars next to key information, or underlining things that you believe will help you answer the various questions. This will make it easier for you to check back when you are asked certain things in the questions. Choose whichever note-taking system is right for you - just make sure you do it!

  4. Step 4: Answer wisely

After you've read the questions, read the passage, and have taken any appropriate notes, you you should have located the part of the text where you where you need to read carefully. Then just read carefully and think critically to determine the correct answer.
