  4. System Integrity Concerns
  5. Disclaimer on Vacations
  6. Airfare, Car Rental, and Lodging

15. Section A

16. Section B

17. Section C

18. Section D

19. Section E

20. Section F

21. Section G

The answer is vi. Section A discusses reimbursement for authorized travel, hotel receipts, airline reservations, and optional automobile travel—topics all related to airfare, car rental, and lodging. The paragraph specifies, “Brighton Industries will reimburse hotel receipts for authorized travel… Airline reservations should be made at least 2 weeks prior to the travel date, in order to minimize expense. Optional automobile travel is reimbursable at the standard mileage rate, not to exceed the cost of airfare and car rental at destination, if applicable.” This clearly aligns with heading (vi) Airfare, Car Rental, and Lodging.

Associated Text:
Brighton Industries will reimburse hotel receipts for authorized travel, as approved by the Executive Director. Personal telephone calls and other items of a personal nature will not be reimbursed. Airline reservations should be made at least 2 weeks prior to the travel date, in order to minimize expense. Optional automobile travel is reimbursable at the standard mileage rate, not to exceed the cost of airfare and car rental at destination, if applicable.

The answer is x. Section B mentions the reimbursement of food and general receipts “incident to travel up to the Federal per diem rate for the city and state involved.” It also covers reimbursement for reasonable lunch and dinner costs and specific exclusions such as no reimbursement for in-town meals unless approved. Heading (x) Meals and Miscellaneous best fits this content as it addresses both meals and miscellaneous expenses incurred while traveling on business.

Associated Text:
Brighton Industries will reimburse food and other general receipts incident to travel up to the Federal per diem rate for the city and state involved. Reasonable lunch and dinner costs incurred in local travel for trips over 7 hours duration are also reimbursable. No reimbursement will be made for in-town meals and entertainment functions involving only Brighton Industries employees unless prior approval has been received from the Executive Director. Traffic or parking tickets incurred by an individual are not reimbursable.

The answer is i. Section C describes reimbursement specifically for mileage, stating, “Brighton Industries will reimburse employees and approved consultants for employee/consultant-owned car usage, based on the current federal mileage rate. For employees, mileage will be reimbursed if it is incurred on a trip extending beyond a five-mile radius from company headquarters.” Therefore, (i) Mileage is the most appropriate heading.

Associated Text:
Brighton Industries will reimburse employees and approved consultants for employee/consultant-owned car usage, based on the current federal mileage rate. For employees, mileage will be reimbursed if it is incurred on a trip extending beyond a five-mile radius from company headquarters. Since mileage from home to work is never reimbursable, employees proceeding directly to a field site or event may be paid for those miles in excess of their normal transit to and from work.

The answer is ix. Section D asserts, “Employee communications and personal information created or stored on Brighton’s systems are not private.” and further clarifies that information may be monitored or recovered by the company. Therefore, this section is best summarized by heading (ix) Privacy of Communications, as it informs employees about the lack of privacy regarding their company communication and information storage.

Associated Text:
Employee communications and personal information created or stored on Brighton’s systems are not private. Employees should be aware that all information created or stored on the network and Internet-related systems, including email, is the property of the company, may be monitored or otherwise reviewed, and may be recovered even though deleted by employee.

The answer is ii. Section E states, “Internet access is provided to employees solely for business purposes…” and further emphasizes the need for appropriate and professional communications. These rules fit the heading (ii) Approved Technology Use, as the section outlines what is considered acceptable use of the company’s internet access.

Associated Text:
Internet access is provided to employees solely for business purposes. Business purposes include communication with clients; communications with other employees; research; information retrieval; and other business tasks designed to achieve the company’s organizational objectives. Correspondence and communications over the Internet should be in good taste avoiding offensive, discriminatory or harassing language. Also, a diligent effort should be made to avoid spelling and grammatical mistakes.

The answer is viii. Section F deals with the company’s ability to monitor network, email, and Internet-related system use “for any reasonable purpose,” and explains that they may access employee files, “including archived material of present and former employees, without the employee’s consent.” This aligns perfectly with heading (viii) Monitoring, as the passage is focused on the company’s rights to observe and inspect digital use by employees.

Associated Text:
Brighton reserves the right to observe all network, email and Internet-related system use by employees for any reasonable purpose, and particularly to ensure proper working order, to assure appropriate use by employees, and to maintain the security and integrity of the company’s information. The company may access employee files, including archived material of present and former employees, without the employee’s consent, for any purpose related to maintaining the security or integrity of the network.

The answer is iv. Section G warns, “No software of any type may be downloaded onto or otherwise installed on the network, email or Internet-related systems without express authorization…” and discusses virus scanning. Heading (iv) System Integrity Concerns best matches this section, as it outlines the measures taken to ensure the security and cleanliness of the company’s technological systems.

Associated Text:
No software of any type may be downloaded onto or otherwise installed on the network, email or Internet-related systems without express authorization from the Executive Director or IT consultant. Employees are required to scan all authorized, employee-installed software applications for viruses using authorized procedures and software. Employees must never open, execute, or run software programs or any other files attached to unsolicited email communications.

We are asking for this presenter to have substantial knowledge in the European Standard Curriculum as well as the American counterparts, since our participants come from all across the area.

The answer is D. Statement 9 discusses energetic presentation skills and facilitating group work. The Financing workshop (D) mentions, “this specific workshop on Financing will need to have more simulations, roleplays, and one-on-one conversations,” and asks the presenter to explain in a “fun, lively fashion,” indicating the need for high energy and group facilitation skills.

Associated Text:
Can you explain standard interest rates in a way that will not bore participants in a fun, lively fashion? If so, this workshop will be perfect for you! Perhaps more than the other workshops, this specific workshop on Financing will need to have more simulations, roleplays, and one-on-one conversations.

The answer is B. For graphic design and diagrams, the Applications and CV workshop (B) specifies, “presenters provide a professional hand-out for each participant. Can you handle making stunning infographics that will capture the participants?” This directly requires proficiency in graphic design and making explanatory diagrams or visuals.

Associated Text:
For this specific workshop, we are asking that presenters provide a professional hand-out for each participant. Can you handle making stunning infographics that will capture the participants?

The answer is A. Statement 11 is about selling marketable skills and attracting attention. The Networking workshop (A) seeks presenters to help graduates "pitch their business, needs, goals, or strengths in 30 seconds or less… market themselves and offer up their skills for the job market!" This summary requires skills in self-promotion and effective communication, key to selling marketable skills.

Associated Text:
If you are able to help graduates pitch their business, needs, goals, or strengths in 30 seconds or less, then this workshop needs you! This workshop will require the presenter to help participants market themselves and offer up their skills for the job market!

The answer is C. Statement 12 refers to unemployment policies, and the Employment Agencies workshop (C) specifies that presenters “offer valuable information about registration, making the switch from unemployment to employment, and fees associated with hiring recruitment services.” This is directly related to understanding and communicating about unemployment policies and transitions.

Associated Text:
We are also asking that presenters offer valuable information about registration, making the switch from unemployment to employment, and fees associated with hiring recruitment services.

The answer is A. Statement 13 asks about on-camera delivery and maintaining composure. The Networking workshop (A) is the only one to say, “this is the only workshop that will be video recorded. As such, we need a calm and collected person to take the stage for this session!” Thus, it directly asks for on-camera skills and composure.

Associated Text:
Please note that this is the only workshop that will be video recorded. As such, we need a calm and collected person to take the stage for this session!

Tips to improve your reading speed
To get a high score on the IELTS reading section, you need to have a fast reading speed. To have a fast reading speed, you need to improve your vocabulary and practice dissecting sentences. One strategy to dissect a sentence is to look for the subject and verb of the sentence. Finding the subject and verb will help you better understand the main idea of said sentence. Keep in mind, a common feature of a IELTS reading passage is to join strings of ideas to form long compound sentences. This produces large chunks that students have a hard time absorbing. Do not get overwhelmed by its length, just look for the subject and verb, the rest of the ideas will flow.

Keep in mind, having a slow reading speed makes skimming or scanning a reading passage more difficult. The process of quickly skimming through a reading passage for specific keywords or main ideas is a requirement for you to employ successful reading strategies to improve your IELTS reading score. In other words, skimming and scanning are critical skills to ensure you complete all questions in the allotted time frame.
IELTS Reading Strategies
Once you can read and comprehend a passage with a rate of, at least, 220 words per minute, you'll be ready to start implementing our strategies. All too often, students spend too much time reading the passages and not enough time answering the questions. Here is a step by step guide for tackling the reading section.

  1. Step 1: Read questions first

One of the most common mistakes that candidates make when approaching the reading exam is reading every single word of the passages. Although you can practice for the exam by reading for pleasure, "reading blindly" (reading without any sense of what the questions will ask) will not do you any favors in the exam. Instead, it will hurt your chances for effectively managing your time and getting the best score.

The main reason to read the questions first is because the type of question may determine what you read in the passage or how you read it. For example, some question types will call for the "skimming" technique, while others may call for the "scanning" technique.

It is important to answer a set of questions that are of the same question type. You'll need to determine which question type you want to tackle first. A good strategy would be to start with the easier question type and move on to more difficult question types later. The Easiest question types are the ones where you spend less time reading. For example, the Matching Heading question type is an easier one because you only need to find the heading that best describes the main idea of a paragraph. An example of a difficult question type would be Identifying Information. For this question type, you'll need to read each paragraph to find out if each statement is TRUE, FALSE, or NOT GIVEN according to the passage.

Here is a table that lists the difficulty levels for each question type. Use this table as a reference when choosing which question type you want to tackle first.

    Difficulty level Question Type
    Easy Sentence Completion
    Short answer
    Medium Matching Features
    Multiple choice
    Matching Headings
    Summary, Table, Flow-Chart Completion
    Difficult Matching Sentence Endings
    Matching Information
    Identifying Information (TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN)
    Identifying Viewer's claims (YES/NO/NOT GIVEN)

  2. Step 2: Read for an objective

After you've read the questions for the passage, you will be able to read for an objective. What does this mean? For example, if you come across a question that includes the year "1896", you can make a note of when this year comes up in the text, using it to answer the question later on. There are two reading techniques that will help you stay on track with reading for an objective. The first one, skimming, is best defined as reading fast in order to get the "gist", or general idea, or a passage. With this technique, you are not stopping for any unfamiliar words or looking for specific details. The second technique, scanning, is best defined as reading for specific information. With this technique, you are not reading for the overall gist, but rather, specific information. Notice how each of these techniques has a specific objective in mind. This will help you find information more quickly.

  3. Step 3: Take notes

As you're reading for an objective, you should also be making notes on the margins of the passage, placing stars next to key information, or underlining things that you believe will help you answer the various questions. This will make it easier for you to check back when you are asked certain things in the questions. Choose whichever note-taking system is right for you - just make sure you do it!

  4. Step 4: Answer wisely

After you've read the questions, read the passage, and have taken any appropriate notes, you you should have located the part of the text where you where you need to read carefully. Then just read carefully and think critically to determine the correct answer.
